ODCM NeedsYour Help
April 26, 2012 at 10:12 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentTags: charity, children's home, Donate, giving, help, ministry
If you know me, I don’t like to ask for money or beg. As a Houseparent and public relations guy I love to tell about the ministry and the great things that God is doing at Open Door. However, the economy has really started taking its toll on our monthly giving. We have been operating on the same budget for several years even though inflation has gone up drastically each year. We have tried to cut spending and have really cut back. But our monthly budget has been in the red for the last few months. I hope you can help out. You can send a donation or visit www.opendoorchildren.org to donate on-line.

The pool pump is on the fritz again. This time it has a big crack in the sand filter. So to raise some money for this and some other projects, we are having a Yard Sale. On Saturday, April 28th, we will be hosting a Yard Sale at Unit Two. The sale will start at 7:30 a.m. and go until 1:30 p.m..
We will be selling some old things that have been lying around Open Door unused for a while. We are also asking anyone who wants to bring items for donation to the sale to bring them to Open Door by March 31st. That way we will have plenty of time to sort and price the items.
To keep it simple, We will have a price guide posted for all toys, clothing items, and other misc. items. Some items will have haggle prices on them while others will be marked “firm”. Monetary donations will also be accepted.
IF you have any items that you would like to donate please bring them to Open Door by March 31s. Call Open Door Christian Ministries for further information.

A Look Back at the Work of ODCM in 2011
January 19, 2012 at 10:06 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentTags: 2011, children, home, raising children
There is no greater joy in this ministry than seeing the faces on the families that we have been able to help. Especially when it is time for the children to go home. It is one of those bitter-sweet days for Wendy and Loren as they have grown very attached to the children in that time.
In the past year, we have seen eight children go home. Three of those children had been at Open Door for over four years. The youngest came when he was 2 years old.
Our ministry works with families that have various needs. Some of the children come to Open Door because they are having difficulties fitting into the family, their school, or just getting along with others. Some of the kids come because Mom and Dad may be having marital or financial difficulties. Some of the kids comer because one or both parents are having problems with drugs or alcohol. Some of the children come to Open Door because they are neglect or abused. No matter why they come to Open Door, we provide them with a place that they can call home while we work with the children and their families to help them find the way to put things back together.
We KNOW that the answer is Jesus Christ. Proverbs 22:6 says “train up a child in the way that he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. That is an obligation that all parents bring their children up in a family relationship with God. His ideal for the family is what makes all the difference if we would just follow it.
This year, we have worked with the children to help them realize what it is like to have Jesus at the center of their lives. We have done this through a positive family role model and through daily Bible study and positive, Biblical discipline and life-skills instruction.
We have also provided counseling resources, encouragement, and support for the families as they try to work through their problems and come to terms with the need for Jesus in their lives.
It has been our privilege to work with many families in 2011 to help them as they work through difficult times. We look forward to the challenges and rewards of this ministry in 2012 and beyond.
We know that there are many families in Eastern North Carolina who could use the help of Open Door Christian Ministries. If you know of a family in need, please feel free to call us or to give them our information.
Thank-you for helping us to reach out to families in need and to care for their children.

Moving the Pig Pickin Indoors
September 15, 2011 at 4:30 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentTags: appreciation, children, children's home, flood, home, hurricane Irene, mosquito
After Hurricane Irene left we thought our troubles would be over. But the flooded canals, ponds, and ditches became putrid with stagnet water. Besides the terrible stench it is a perfect breading ground for mosquitos. Those blood-thirsty varmits are swarming by the millions all over the place. The other evening I left the door to the truck open for a few minutes while I picked up a stick off the ground and when I came back to the truck the cab looked like a mosquito tank off an insect commercial.
This is why we have decided to move the pig pickin indoors. It will still take place on September 24 at 3:00 p.m. but it will be held at the Philippi Church of Christ Family Life Center. We were concerned that someone might get sick from the mosquitos and it is never pleasant to get bit anyway. Plus, some of those bigger critters might have gotten the notion to carry off one or two of you.
We look forward to seeing you all here… there.
Aftermath of Hurricane Irene
September 8, 2011 at 11:00 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentHurricane Irene was scheduled to come ashore about the time Olivia got off for fall break from ”horsey school”. So Wendy, Kaiyden, and I made a fast trip up to Waverly, WV to pick her up. We got back home about 11:30 p.m. on Friday as the storm hit. In fact, a tornado had already hit in Columbia only 12 miles away. We quickly got our supplies together and got the generator out, just in case.
State of the Economy
August 6, 2011 at 10:13 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentTags: charity, donations, economy
By no means am I an expert on the economy, but last night, the nation’s credit rating was down graded and the continuing state of the nation, churches, individuals, and even Open Door, is effected. Due to the economy, the finances of individuals supporting the churches has declined. Because the church finances are down, several congregations have had to cut or decrease the giving to missions. This has caused us not to be able to meet the monthly goals at Open Door.
Like everyone else, we have been trying to cut back on spending and get by with less. Wendy and I spend a lot of time turning of lights and unplugging things that don’t need to be left plugged in. We have tried to cut back on the food cost by purchasing only those things that are necessary and letting our supplies get lower before stocking up. We have also done a lot more self-repairs rather than calling in the professionals.
One of the things I have been asking churches that have had to make these cuts is not to totally take us out of their budget. Often times when a church drops a mission because of economic reasons they rarely reinstate that mission when the giving comes up. But when church leaders make the decision to cut back with prayer and the commitment to revisit the situation a few months down the line they often find that God has provided the finance to increase support sometimes even more than they originally cut.
Of course the big thing to remember is that all things must be based on faith in God. After all, “He owns the cattle on a thousand hills”. As I like to say, “God has bigger pockets than you or I.” God can see us all through financial woes. I have seen this in my life over and over again.
If worse comes to worse, there are always alternative ways to support Open Door Christian Ministries. We are always appreciative of gifts of good, used clothing and shoes that you may have out-grown. Donations of canned and dry goods, cleaning products, and paper goods are helpful for bringing down our expenses. We accept food items that are grown in your garden or meat and fish that you may have from hunting or fishing. We have also had homemade blankets, quilts, and other art projects donated in the past.
Besides donations, there are also ways that you can help raise funds. A young lady from Wilmington held an art sale for Open Door and raised over $700. Spaghetti dinners, walk-a-thons, golf tournaments, fishing contest, BBQ plate dinners, and other fund raisers not only help with the bottom line but help raise awareness of what Open Door Christian Ministries is all about and they help build a fellowship with those who sponsor them. Churches and youth groups who do fundraisers often find that they recieved a bigger blessing than those for which they organized the event.
Another way to help out is to use companies that give donations to Open Door. You can register your MVP card on line and Food Lion will give a donation for every person registered. You can also use a search engine called goodsearch.com when you are searching for things on-line and they will donate to Open Door. If you need help with either of these ideas please call the office at 252-797-4602 and talk to Carla.
You may be surprised to find that your employer may have a donation program. Take time to ask them if they would be interested in giving a donation to our children’s home. You may find hidden blessings in getting others involved.
But perhaps the biggest way that anyone can help Open Door Christian Ministries is through their prayers. We appreciate the prayers for the past, present, and future residents at Open Door. We also appreciate prayers for our leadership, house parents, and other staff. Please pray that Open Door Christian Ministries will be here to help families and children in need for many more years.
Thanks for your continued support and prayers for Open Door Christian Ministries.
